Eating out in Viñales, Cuba

Eating out in Cuba wasn’t much fun until recently. In fact, food in general is seen as a necessary activity rather than a pleasure and Cubans are very fast eaters. Though all food is locally sourced and fresh, very few spices are used, apart from cumin and maybe some black pepper on lobster. Typical Cuban fare consists of rice, beans, vegetables, salad and mostly chicken, fish or pork. Lobster and beef are sometimes available. International cuisine seems to consist of friend chicken, pizza, spaghetti and burgers. Lovers of ham and cheese are happy, vegetarians less so.

However, in 2011, free enterprise was encouraged and many locals opted to open food stalls and private restaurants known as paladares. Vinales is probably one of the best places in Cuba to eat out. There are 3 quality hotels who provide food all day long, from poolside snacks to formal dining rooms. All the tourist venues, such as the Cueva del Indio, the Mural de la Prehistoria, Polo Montanez and so all also have fully serviced restaurants. And there are also a good range of state run restaurants and privately run paladares in Vinales.

This is not counting the B+B houses who also provide good, wholesome, home cooked food and are an ideal option for the tired tourist who just wants to chill out and relax. Many houses have nice gardens and balconies and provide cocktails and other beverages with meals. Read more…
